After a lovely day on the water on the day boat in the province of Friesland, we sailed to Urk, where we stayed overnight. We arrived in time for a beautiful sunset and a guided walk through the town for a few of us. Unfortunately, the crew had quite a challenge with the gangplank, so we were late getting off the boat, and it was pretty well dark.
Urk is a very religious town, and we arrived on a Sunday evening, so things were very quiet, and all were tucked into their homes. It seems that the people of the Netherlands typically leave their front windows uncovered, which gave us a peak into their homes, although I tried not to be too obvious! Just looked out of the corner of my eye! We were reminded often to be quiet as we walked through the narrow streets.
A very lovely sunset!
The lighthouse is an important part of this island town.
And yet another view of the sunset and the lighthouse.
A one-time church, now a museum.
This beautiful stained glass window in a church depicts the calling by Jesus of some of his disciples. Apt, for this long time fishing village.
This statue also depicts the fishermen with their nets full of fish.
"URK!" I think someone forgot to go slow!
On a high point of land, near the lighthouse, and overlooking the sea, this statue depicts one of the women of the village watching for her husband or perhaps her son to return from his fishing voyage.
In a semi-circle all around the statue, on a low brick wall, are signs such as this listing fishermen who died at sea.
I loved seeing the lighthouse!
This is a huge anchor recovered from the sea.
........until next time........
