River Cruise 2015 - Sunday, April 26

On Sunday, April 26, we got off the DaVinci in Lemmer, walked across the dock to a smaller boat called the Klienje dag boat for a cruise to the town of Sneek (pronounced snake) via Koevorder Meer and Sneekmeer.  This is in the province of Friesland, where our friend Herm came from.  Apparently, they have a totally different language than the rest of Netherlands.  Kind of like Quebec?  After lunch in Sneek, we returned via a different route back to Lemmer.

This was our "day boat"  - not too shabby!

A cool statue of a fisherman by the canal.

These folks were heading out for the day in their lovely boat.

What a beautiful home by the water!

This was a skate factory at the time of the second world war, and the Germans stole all the skates to use the steel.  It is once again a skate factory.

A working windmill - you can see the logs in the river waiting to be sawed.

Another old-fashioned wind mill - I love them!

Goose in flight.

I believe this had something to do with catching eels.  Correct me if I'm wrong, Herm.

This was the watergate to the city of Sneek - dating to 1613.  If you were approaching the walled city by water, this was how you must enter.

"Peggy One" (right), and her sister Nancy were some friends from last fall and again this spring.  They are standing by the duck-seller in the market square in Sneek.
Lunch in Sneek - French fries with mayo!  For you, Marj! We were given 15euros for luch, but after snacks on the day boat, and a 4course dinner to look forward to, this was enough!

How many times do you think this little guy has had his head patted or stroked?

The Friesian flag (left), the Dutch flag (centre), and the European Union flag (right).

 Another beautiful windmill.
We saw lots of lovely Friesian horses!
I found this interesting - we saw many of them in Friesland.  The part with the less expensive red tiles is the barn, and the attached part with the more expensive black tiles is the house.

We saw lots of sheep "mowing" the grass along the canals.  What a good idea!

It was that time of year - lots of lambs!

It's hard to get away from these kind of windmills as well - not nearly as attractive, but very plentiful!

                                                             .....until next time.....
