Brookgreen Gardens - sculptures - March 20/14

We went to Brookgreen Gardens on March 20, but I took too many pics to do one blog, so this is the first installment.  The "main event" in this place is the sculptures, and there are 100's - in various sizes.  By far the majority of the sculptures are done by Anna Hyatt Huntington, former owner of this plantation. Here are a few.

Reading over the shoulder of this old farmer.

They are currently having a show of "Equine Spirit - The Horse in American Art", and there are 2 large rooms filled with equine sculptures and paintings.  Amazing stuff!

If you look closely, you will see that this horse had a hitch-hiker!
I love the story that went with this one.  On April 26, 1777, Sybil Ludington rode 40 miles through the night to alert her father's regiment that the British had attacked Danbury CT.  This was sculpted by Anna Hyatt Huntington to honor her.

This life-sized gilt bronze statue of Dionysus graces the center of the sculpture garden.

The Nova Scotia Fisherman.

The verse written under this sculpture is Psalm 139:9-10.

The loon, the heron, and the grouse.

And this is my favorite.  I am in the picture to show the size of this workhorse and farmer.  Anna Hyatt Huntington began the sculpture when she was 87 years old, finished it when she was 90!
