Bike riding in Hilton Head

What a great day of biking we had today in Hilton Head!   This is a picture of a map of the island - shaped like a boot or foot.  Right on the bottom in the yellow toward the toe is a place called Coligny.  There's a traffic circle, a public beach area, and a shopping area with over 60 shops and restaurants.  It's considered to be the downtown of the island.  We're staying at a place right behind there.  We went onto the beach a little further down the way toward Sea Pines, which is the whole purple area in the toe, and is gated.  Before the gate, we went to the beach and biked along until we were within the area, then went to the bike paths - like lots of other people do!

There are miles of paths, and I think they were built to go around the trees.  They are so nice!

We biked to Harbour Town, right down at the tip, and decided to sit on this swing, read, eat our lunch and relax.

Then we went on down to the harbour, sat in rocking chairs, read, and bought a coffee.  It's really hard to concentrate, what with talking to people, watching boats and people.

TWO "boys" sitting and reading!

This is a well-known landmark in Harbour Town - the lighthouse.

We could see that there was a BIG fire on the mainland - hope it was a controlled burn!

Coming in for a landing!

Guess what?  Remember the trees of fruit that we enjoyed eating from in Kissimmee?  We found one in Harbour Town - Yummm!

I love the big old spreading oaks!

This was absolutely the best find of the day!  I have wanted to see one of these ever since I knew there were such things, and today we saw TWO!  They are called Yellow Crowned Night Herons, and are very hard to spot.  I probably wouldn't have if someone else hadn't been taking pics of them.

We went through a Forest Nature Center today.  It's where we saw the night herons as well as lots of turtles and even some alligators.

This field of wildflowers was also in the center.

And just outside of the center, right beside a park where a ball game was going on was this big gator - about 12 feet long!
We left this morning about 10:30 and got home about 6:00 - another one of those days when you just can't bear to go inside!
